Esther had needed a change of scenery so she and Jamie had come out for Sunday lunch but she was already questioning whether it had been a good idea after all. She resisted the temptation to down the glass of wine in front of her in one large gulp as she watched Jamie twitch opposite her, his eyes consistently flitting from one side of the restaurant to the other, and then scanning everything in between.

“Will you please stop doing that?” Esther pleaded.

“Doing what?”

“Your eyes are everywhere but on me.”

Jamie looked at her and made a real effort to hold her eyes for a moment. “I’m sorry. I’m not doing it on purpose but now that I’ve seen pictures of your dad, I can’t help keeping an eye out. You know, just in case.”

The place was buzzing but the number of people was making Jamie nervous, wondering how on earth he was supposed to keep them both safe.

“Worried he might want to check your intentions towards me are honourable are you?”

“That’s not funny Esther.”

Esther smiled but the moment quickly passed as the enormity of the situation settled back on to her shoulders.

“What are you going to do?” Jamie asked her.

“Well I’m not moving out, that’s for sure. Ade has nothing to suggest I’m even on my Dad’s radar and the last few days have been unsettling enough without adding leaving my home to the list. Plus, I’ve got work to do and keeping busy, along with some semblance of normality, feels pretty important right now. So sod my pathetic excuse for a father. I simply won’t allow myself to be intimidated.”

“Well then I’m moving in,” Jamie said in response. “And before you accuse me of taking advantage of the situation, that’s absolutely not what I’m doing. I know it’s not something you want at the moment and I know how important your independence is but, right now, I’m going to have to insist it’s the right thing to do.” Esther raised her eyebrows with a smile. “I can work from home,” he continued, “and I promise to keep out of your way but you have to let me do this.”

“Well if having you move in means you’ll stop asking me every five minutes if I’m okay then I suppose we could make it work. Temporarily, of course.”

“Of course,” he repeated. “And what about helping the police?” Esther thought for a moment but said nothing so Jamie kept going. “I know I was the one shouting ‘no way’ at the very idea but if you can help find Abi’s killer then maybe I overreacted? I suppose she deserves justice just like anyone else.”

Esther’s eyes shot up. “She used me and she lied to me and if my Dad found out she was working undercover, there’s every chance Matt is lying somewhere dead too.” Her eyes filled with tears, her words echoing around her head, sounding worse each time they repeated.

“All the more reason to help them then surely?” he said, taking hold of her hand.
